Kano is the cheapest city to fuel a car and power a Generator while Bayelsa is the most expensive. The irony of the situation is difficult to ignore considering that Bayelsa is Nigeria’s top oil producing state, while Kano cannot boast of a drop of crude oil. Also, two of the nation’s refineries are just next door to Bayelsa State in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. It is not clear why fuel prices are so high in Bayelsa and apparently so cheap in Kano.
However, the data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which show average prices of fuel across the country, puts the average price of a litre of fuel across the country at N104.48.
This is N17 above the official subsidized N87 per litre an indication that marketers are eating their cake and having it. While they collect subsidy from the government based on the difference between the official and landing price of fuel, they are still able to sell the fuel above the official price to majority of Nigerians, counting their profit twice in the process.
